‘What It Takes' Series 2) Security Consultant

In this article, we will explore the average career path of becoming a Security Consultant in a private company. Using openly available information from ten randomly chosen Security Consultant profiles from LinkedIn, an average CV will be constructed that highlights common experiences, education and other skills to help you understand what it takes to become one.

Prior Education

20% had Undergraduate & Masters Degrees, 30% had Masters Degrees Only, 20% had Undergraduate Degrees Only, 10% had a foundation degree, 20% had no higher education.

*Subjects included: Business Management, Foreign Languages, Global Security, Intelligence, Law, Security Management, Terrorism Studies, English Literature, Engineering, Development Studies.

Prior Experience

On average, individuals had at least three paid positions for 9 years prior to becoming a Security Consultant. One individual had three internships lasting 16 months prior to their paid positions.

*Internships included at: Private Risk Company and a Bank.

*Prior paid positions included; military positions, technology consultant, security trainer, humanitarian and development positions, project manager, landscaper, x ray screener, bodyguard, security officer and a teacher.

Language Skills

60% listed no languages skills, 10% listed basic level of a European language, 30% listed advanced skills in at least one European language. 

Additional Skills

50% stated no additional skills, 30% had completed Risk Management Courses, 10% had completed academic certificates with the UN, 10% had close protection qualifications.

  • Of the 10 profiles viewed, 12 undergraduate, post graduate degrees and foundation degrees were identified, with 28% of degrees taken in Global Security, 17% in a Foreign Language, 17% in Security Risk Management, 8% in International Relations, 8% in English Languages, 8% in Journalism, 8% in Engineering, 8% in Law, 8% in Development Studies and 8% in Weapons.

  • The maximum number of internships an individual completed prior to becoming a Security Consultant was three. The minimum was zero.

  • The maximum length of time for an individual to complete several internships was 16 months. The minimum length of time was 0 months.

  • The maximum number of paid positions an individual completed prior to becoming a Security Consultant was 8 jobs. The minimum was one jobs.

  • European languages spoken included French (25%), Spanish (25%), German (20%) Dutch (10%), Arabic (10%) and Hebrew (10%).
